Determined Waters makes honest Taupo assessment

Waters

By Thomas Miles

Having held onto second in the Sprint Cup standings by the skin of his teeth, Cameron Waters claims Taupo will be the “lowest point of our year.”

The Taupo Super440 started promisingly for Waters as he wrestled back the championship lead from Will Brown with a strong second place in Saturday’s opening race.

But it was all downhill from there as Waters could not find the same speed on the Super Soft and could only manage 14th.

As a result the Sprint Cup lead returned to the hands of Brown and the Tickford driver hoped to hit back in Sunday’s longer 61-lap affair.

But those chances were severely impacted by a costly mistake in Qualifying at the hairpin which restricted the #6 Mustang to 18th on the grid.

Unlike Broc Feeney, Waters could not blaze his way through the field and ended up 12th having had a clash with Macauley Jones and suffered a slow pit stop.

The impact on the Sprint Cup standings is significant given Brown’s lead over Waters extended from seven to 34 points, while Jason Richards Memorial Trophy winner Matt Payne is now just 15 away.

As he aims to bounce back at Symmons Plains, Waters is determined to make sure there will not be a repeat performance for the rest of the year.

“Started well, then went downhill, got a little bit better and then went downhill again,” Waters said in a Tickford video.

“We probably had pace for front and we were actually really fast in the (final) race, but obviously slow pit stop and I made a mistake in qualifying.

“We will come back way better than this weekend.

“This will be the lowest point of our year. We will be a lot better from here.”
