Gather Round at Adelaide International Raceway

Adelaide Raceway

By Auto Action

No, not the AFL, but the SA motor racing community “gathered round” old favourite Adelaide International Raceway today.

Today the gates opened for a very special drive down memory lane at the iconic venue that has been in a deep hiatus for many years.

The event hosted by the Sporting Car Club of South Australia was held as a special promotion and driving experience in lead up to this weekend’s All Historic Mallala.

The sights, sounds and smells of yesteryear came rushing back for many who had been there in the past.

It also produced a new and memorable experience for the new generation, as some had never been to the venue which was opened in 1972 and hosted regular ATCC meetings, but last hosted a sanctioned circuit racing event in 1999.

However, drifting events were last staged in 2016 and ANDRA Drag Racing continued through to it’s final event on the 24th of March 2018.

Some of the cars and colours that raced at AIR in the seventies and eighties returned to the rarely used tarmac for a special promotion and driving experience in lead up to this weekend’s All Historic Mallala.

Gates open at 9am for the public on both days and on the Friday night a Street Party will take place in the heart of the township from 5-8pm on Wasleys Road.

Reviving Adelaide International Raceway was a special way to kick start a special weekend of sport in South Australia with footy in the city and racing up north.
