Moffat and Davison Friday leaders

Moffat

By Thomas Miles

After the opening day of action at the Bathurst 6 Hour, Supercars regulars James Moffat and Will Davison lead the way in their respective categories.

The enormous 72-car field swarmed Mount Panorama for two practice sessions on Friday and a familiar face topped the timesheets.

Davison and co-drivers Tim Leahey and Brock Lynton emerged on top with a 2:21.8304 recorded in Practice 2.

It was a comfortable 0.4875s clear of the #1 BMW M4 of Simon Hodges/Jayden Ojeda/George Miedecke.

That trio will be one to watch having won the race last year with Hodges and Ojeda chasing a hat-trick.

It was a BMW top four with Dean Campbell and Cameron Crick then Tom McLennan and David Russell rounding it out.

The leading non BMW was Aaron Seton, Jason Gomersall and Todd Hazelwood was fifth, 2.1s off the pace.

All up 34s covered the versatile field.

With assistance from TA2, Trans Am is also supplying a bumper field with 41 cars on show.

Leading the way was Moffat, who is determined to bounce back after bad luck struck in the opening round at Symmons Plains.

His 2:11.8440 was just a tenth clear of GRM teammate James Golding with the pair half a second ahead of Nash Morris.

Tom Davies was a second off the pace but put another GRM Mustang into the top four, followed by Nathan Herne.

Reigning champion Todd Hazelwood could only manage seventh.

It was an interrupted session with the first red flag arriving at the 12 minute mark when Ben Grice stopped at The Cutting and Ben Gomersall brought the session to an early end with six minutes still to run after a whack at Forrest’s Elbow.

Things get serious today with Trans Am qualifying at 10.20 before the first race at 14.05 while qualifying for the 6 Hour takes place at 13.05.
