Murray determined to keep progressing

Murray at Aus GP

By Thomas Miles

Whilst the race results did not go his way, Erebus rookie Cooper Murray is carrying some confidence to New Zealand.

Having showed strong qualifying speed and recorded a maiden solo top 10 at the Melbourne SuperSprint, Murray is in a positive frame of mind.

The #99 Camaro was one of the fastest cars on Saturday, qualifying fifth and third in the intense back to back qualifying sessions.

However, Murray was not able to make the most of those starting positions, getting involved in a lot of skirmishes before ending up in the Turn 11 fence in Saturday’s sprint, while his shot at a podium was denied by the Sunday rain.

It was still a strong step forward from the Sydney 500 where the Erebus rookie had a best result of 18th.

As a result, Murray is a buoyant figure ahead of his first trip to Taupo and New Zealand as a racer having enjoyed the meeting from the Triple Eight garage last year.

“Coming out of the Grand Prix I have some confidence,” he said.

“Qualifying fifth and third in the final two races really proved where my speed can be when we get the car into the window.

“Eyes forward to New Zealand now where we can hopefully roll out with a strong car and continue our good form.

“I am finding my feet, but at the moment there is some really tough racing.

“All the door to door contact makes you a better driver and I am having fun.

“I went there last year with Triple Eight to learn as much as I could and the atmosphere was crazy and really excited to go as a driver and get amongst it.”
