Touring Car Masters ready to roar

By Thomas Miles

The Touring Car Masters will roar once again at the “Home of Horsepower” Sandown Raceway this weekend for the penultimate round of 2024.

A 21-car field has been locked in with David Casey (Holden Torana A9X) and Allan Argento (Ford Falcon GT) the new additions.

Casey’s inclusion means there will be eight A9X Toranas in the field, while Argento ensures there are six Fords for the “Blue Oval” fans to cheer on.

One of those will be the unmissable BRUT Mustang of Steven Johnson, who will make a welcome return to the category.

Johnson is out of the title race after being forced to skip Sydney due to a chest infection, but is back fit and firing to go racing once again after John Bowe played super sub.

The season returns after a thrilling trip to Sydney where Jamie Tilley threw himself into the mix.

A maiden round win orchestrated by a stunning final race success saw the Mustang driver snatch the honours and surge to second in the championship ahead of big names Ryan Hansford and Joel Heinrich.

However, all three drivers need to make significant ground on leader Adam Garwood.

Garwood’s VB Commodore has been the pacesetter since Perth and enjoys a handy 43-point advantage over Tilley in the title race.

But he is determined to get back to winning ways after missing out at SMP.

Hansford went back to back in the first two races in Sydney, but could not complete the job in the finale and will be determined to ensure that does not happen again.

Steven Johnson will be back racing in the BRUT Mustang.

Fifth place in the championship is Danny Buzadzic, who is always one to watch in the Allan Grice tribute Torana, especially in the Trophy Races.

He has prepared for Sandown by racing at the same circuit in the Vic V8s at a Victorian State Series meeting just a fortnight ago where he claimed one race win.

This is the first time since the 2022 Touring Car Masters has gone racing at Sandown.

On that occasion it was a nail-biter in wet conditions with just 14 points covering the top five and Adam Bressington led a Camaro 1-2 ahead of George Miedecke.

Current day stars Hansford and Andrew Fisher completed the top four with the Multispares Racing driver getting a victory in the finale.

The usual Trophy Race, plus three-race format will be there to entertain the fans once again.
