Cape Town F1 proposal revealed

Cape Town

By Thomas Miles

One of the numerous potential future F1 locations is Cape Town and a Miami style proposed track layout has been revealed.

South Africa, nor the African continent has not hosted F1 since the final race at the historic Kyalami back in 1993.

Whilst Rwanda has strongly expressed interest, so has South Africa with Autosport revealing plans to take it to the streets of Cape Town in full swing.

A Hemert Tilke designed track has been revealed running along the coast of the South Atlantic Ocean under the watchful eye of Table Mountain.

In similar scenes to Miami, the 5.7km track will run alongside 2010 FIFA World Cup venue DHL Stadium, which will house the paddock, media centre and hospitality areas.

The track itself that rings around Green Point Park on the eastern side of DHL Stadium, appears to feature 21 corners, the majority of which are 90 degree corners.

Cape Town is not the only potential venue for F1’s return to Africa with competition from Rwanda which hosted last year’s FIA Prize Giving ceremony and Kyalami.

“The latest design has all the bells and whistles,” Cape Town GP CEO Igshaan Amlay told Autosport.

“It is partly on the waterfront and it also uses facilities that has been used for the football world cup.

“We are up against Kyalami, which has a rich F1 history so it is a street race versus a purpose built circuit.

“Here we can easily accommodate 250,000 people, so it is more accessible.

“We will be waiting to see what the decision will be.”

In addition to Africa, there is strong interest for a race to take place in Thailand as well.
