Supercars touchdown in Taupo

Supercars were shipped to Taupo

By Thomas Miles

Supercars has arrived in New Zealand today as preparations for next week’s Taupo Super440 are in full swing.

A total of 21 containers carried 240 tonnes and $40 million worth of equipment across the Tasman to ensure the annual New Zealand round could take place.

For the first time the 24-car field made the journey across the ditch via sea freight, which saw two-car teams pack all essential equipment into a single 40-foot container.

Then the main container included both race cars with spare engines, transaxles and wheels are housed in a shared space.

It left a very tight two-day turnaround following the Australian Grand Prix sprint meeting, but everything has arrived on time.

Containers arrived in New Zealand overnight and teams have started to bump into Taupo on Thursday, eight days before cars hit the track for opening practice.

“We’re always proud to race in New Zealand, and it’s been a big undertaking to get the cars to Taupo,” said Supercars Logistics Manager Jason Routley.

“We must say well done to the teams for turning around their cars and equipment quickly after the Grand Prix to prepare for the journey.

“It’s always exciting when the cars arrive in New Zealand, and we’re proud to have worked with Sealab to make this happen.

“Many thanks to Adam Frank and Simonne Taylor, who have worked tirelessly with Supercars teams from an administrative and operational perspective to make this all happen, and are onsite now bumping the cars and equipment in.”
